Malcolm
Marshall
81 Caps, 371 Wickets |
Distant
relation of the Sway star! One of the finest pacemen ever to have played
test cricket, despite being relatively short at just 5'9. Still has the
lowest bowling average of any test bowler with over 200 wickets -
just 20.94. Older members will recall his years at Hampshire. |
 |
Courtney
Walsh
132 Caps, 519 Wickets |
Never as
natural in his action as Marshall, Ambrose or Garner, Walsh was a natural
athlete who improved as a bowler as he aged, even as he lost his original
pace. One of only 4 bowlers, and the only paceman to have bowled over
5,000 test overs. |
 |
Curtley
Ambrose
98 Caps, 405 Wickets |
At 6'7
Ambrose running in was a fearsome sight for TV viewers, never mind batsmen
- awesome pace, bounce and aggression. An enigma, rarely interviewed and would
simply reply ""Curtly don't talk to no man.". His mother
would ring a large bell back in Antigua every time he took a wicket -
guaranteeing many sleepless nights for the neighbours! |
 |
Gordon
Greenidge
108 Caps, 7,558 runs,
Av 44.72 |
One of
the most feared
opening batsman in Test cricket. Together with opening partner Desmond
Haynes, they made 6,482 in partnerships, the highest total for a batting
partnership in Test cricket history. Scored an amazing "double-double
century" during
the 1984 5-0 "Blackwash" against England. Played county cricket
for Hampshire. |

Sir
Garfield Sobers
93 Caps, 8032 runs
Av 57.78 |
Probably
the greatest ever all-rounder, left-handed as both batsman and
bowler. His versatility enabled him to bowl all varieties of left-arm
bowling from spin to fast-medium. In 1968 he became the first batsman ever
to hit six sixes in a single over of six consecutive balls in first-class
cricket whilst playing for Notts against Glamorgan. |
 |
Sir Vivian
Richards
121 Caps, 8,540 runs,
Av 50.23
|
Known as
"The King" is regarded by many as the most devastating
batsman that ever played the game. Despite playing in the greatest
fast-bowling era, he never wore a helmet. He was able to totally dominate
and intimidate fast bowlers. Teamed up with his friend Ian Botham at
Somerset and entertained cricket fans in a golden age for English cricket. |
 |
Brian Lara
131 Caps, 11,953 runs
Av 52.88 |
"The
Prince". Holds both the record for the highest individual innings in
Test cricket (400 not out) and in First Class cricket (501 not out). A
prodigy from an early age, at just 14, scored 745 runs in the school
cricket, with an average of 126.16. Holds the Test record for the most
runs in one over - 28 against South Africa. One of the most naturally
gifted players, he probably has the record for the most records! |
