Nailor stars in 1st XI nailbiter

Andover II 216 Sway 218-8. Sway won by 2 wickets

Hants County Div 1

Report by Jon Waller

Sam Nailor was Sway’s hero, hitting the 10 the visitors needed to win off the game’s final over, including two boundaries – one of which was an incredible reverse sweep shot off a medium pacer.

Nailor superbly held his nerve and hit a terrific unbeaten 20 in the worsening light at Andover, the winning four accompanied by boisterous cheers from his team-mates on the boundary to keep Sway’s very faint promotion chances on track.

In truth Sway had been firm favourites going into the final 10 overs, needing a run a ball and with wickets in hand, but several batsmen came and went as the pressure built.

However, Nailor was unmoved, timing his hitting and the chase brilliantly in what was an absolute classic finish.

His innings backed up a determined 51 from Will Millard and 46 from skipper Tim Noble against a decent Andover bowling attack. Dan Bailey (29) also chipped in as did David Steadman (14) and Jack Walton (13).

Earlier on in the day excellent spells from Dan Bailey (4-35) and Steve How (4-47) helped Sway polish off Andover’s lower order to restrict the hosts to a chaseable score on a fast outfield.

Jonathan Waller (1-17) had kept things tight early on and took a fantastic caught and bowled, while Walton also claimed a wicket in a tidy spell as Sway were good in the field.

The only blip came when How had the chance of a hat-trick – the delivery being smacked by the batsmen to long on, but the catch was downed.

Sam Nailor - dusty but unbeaten!
