Sway 238-3, Portsmouth 158ao
A brilliant unbeaten 144 from Alex Hall ensured the champagne corks could pop after Sway secured the win they needed to earn promotion to Hampshire County Div 1 for the first time in the club’s history.
From the off Hall was in imperious form, striking 12 off the second over of the day, as he and fellow opener Tim Noble (31), got the hosts off to a cracking 111-run start Hall’s knock was chanceless as he breezed beyond 50 quickly, hitting a number of eye-catching shots and bringing up his first ton of the season with a hit down the ground.
Along the way Hall was joined by Oscar Marshall, who hit a breezy 28, and Will Millard to help Sway to very decent 238-3. Towards the end Hall really went through the gears, smacking one massive six to go with the 18 boundaries he had already bludgeoned.
In reply Portsmouth got off to a decent start but were pegged back when Marshall took an excellent catch to give Lloyd Scott (3-43) his first wicket. Further good grabs by Millard and Will Baughan earned Scott his other scalps as the visitors lurched to 64-3 off 18 overs.
The introduction of Jon Grasham (1-29), bowling his left arm tweakers, brought immediate reward and when Josh Bailey also struck early the visitors looked dead and buried at 72-5. However, two batsmen then came together, with Ishafaque Ahmad (57) in particular impressing.
But when Josh Bailey got the breakthrough with a caught and bowled on his way to excellent figures of 4-37, any jitters were settled. The introduction of spin twin Dan Bailey (2-25) – aided by a Hall stumping and a Scott catch – saw Sway wrap up the win they needed so the celebrations could commence.
Alex Hall - superb unbeaten ton.
