Langley Manor 134-3 Sway 135-0
Embracing a new 9v9 format & just 16 overs a side with 3 overs per bowler Sway u16s opened their account this season in the cup-winning form that they had finished last season with.
Skipper Tom Burton won the toss & invited Langley Manor to establish what a par score was in the new format. The opposition certainly obliged as they went off like the proverbial train taking 50 off the first 6 overs for the loss of just 1 wicket as Malo Holden held a good catch off Ollie Smith, but generally the home bowlers failed to find their line & length as Garner (50 ret.) & Davies (25) made hay while the sun shone.
Arthur Lomax (3-0-16-0) & Dan Bailey (3-0-19-0) then steadied the home ship a little with tighter lines but just 7 outfielders meant that there were gaps & Langley continued to find them with 100 coming up in the 13th over. Anthony Rogers was rewarded for a good couple of overs with a wicket in the 14th over & Bradley Balcombe picked another one up next over as Langley Manor finished on 134-3 from their 16 overs & seemed quite pleased with that.
They obviously hadn't reckoned with the Sway B-team of Dan Bailey & Tom Burton who certainly enjoyed the fewer fielders & relatively fast outfield (compared to others locally). Burton went fairly aerial & chanced his arm a bit as he was dropped 1st ball & another couple of times as he plundered 6x4s & 1x6 to retire at 50. However he was just beaten to the half-century by Bailey who smote 7x4s & 1x6 in a chanceless 50 as the pair put on 120 in 10 overs at strike rates of around 200 before both retiring to the hutch. The Langley Manor attack didn't quite know what had hit them because their bowling was significantly straighter & arguably better than the home team!
It was left to Anthony Rogers with a classy 16 and Thomas Clowes (9) to play themselves in & wrap up the chase without further loss in the 13th over.
A solid start to the season against good opposition.
