3rd XI slip to disappointing defeat

Report by Dave Hurrell

Sway lost the toss on a damp Pennington wicket and were not surprisingly asked to bat first. R.Ahmed caused all kinds of problems with his cutters removing the in form Rick How early and despite Tom Burton, Will Baughan and Paul Anderson all getting starts, they were all bowled by the sharp movement off the pitch. Opener Pete Bennet had been playing a most patient innings from the start and was just 2 deliveries away from seeing out Ahmed when he fell bowled like the others for a valuable 27 leaving Ahmed with figures of 10 6 16 5. M.Lock was also bowling well and removed the big hitting trio of Matt Burton, Chris Morris and Charlie Smith leaving Sway wobbling at 69 - 8. Jim Metcalfe and Steve Drayton helped matters with a 48 run partnership before Drayton fell for 23 and there was just time for Ben Sanger to hit 2 lovely fours to register another batting point before he was bowled off of the penultimate delivery with Metcalfe on 24 not out.

C.Draper and C.Greenwood opened for Brockenhurst and made a steady start before M.Burton had Draper caught by Morris in his first over with the score on 23. Burton and Metcalfe were now to share the next 20 overs and it was Metcalfe who after giving away 9 runs in his opening 2 overs who then set about dragging Sway back into contention. He picked up the wickets of Greenwood (16) and 3 more including the dangerous Ahmed for 27 ending with 4 - 14 from his 10 overs and Brockenhurst on 74 - 5 off of 28 overs. M.Lock had come in at number 4 and was going along nicely now Tom Burton joined the attack and collected 2 wickets leaving it close at 102 - 7 with 5 overs remaining. Big hitter Andy Sque was in at 9 and a six and 4 off of consecutive balls edged Brock closer, before an excellent chase and throw from T.Burton ran out Lock for 34, however another 6 from Sque saw Brock home with 11 balls left.

So a defeat for the 3rds, but any disappointment will be banished by the appearance on the sidelines of Sway legend, Dave Hurrell !! [Ed.]
