Sway 4ths do club proud

The 4ths travelled to Bartley Cricket Ground for their first away game of the season with a weakened team which included Christine Dawson who played for the 4ths 2 years ago and Fiona Willis and 13 year old Jake Olney making their debuts and Duncan Savage playing only his 2nd game.

Captain Derek Seward lost the toss and the opposition elected to bat. Tim Rogers and his son Ben opened the batting and rapidly took the score to 24 before James Howard had Tim Rogers caught in the covers by Colin Crosthwaite for 17 before Colin removed Ben Rogers in the very next. This brought Paige Bailey and Ben Griffin to the crease and the pair took the score to 56 before Griffin was removed bowled in his first over by David West. However before this Bailey had been dropped at mid-wicket this proving to be a very important miss and which ultimately could have made the game much more interesting. In the final over of his first spell David West removed the Manor’s no 5 caught at mid-wicket by Duncan Savage. At the other end Malo Holden was bowling well and he took his first wicket in adult cricket by bowling Harry Prisk for 9. Jerram replaced him and hit 2 boundaries in making 10 before he was bowled by the returning West. Conway became David’s 4th victim caught again by Duncan Savage.

Tony Alford the Manor’s no 9 then gave good support to Bailey who reached her ton. The pair took the score to 216 before Malo bowled Alford for 20. Perkins was bowled by Duncan Savage for 1. Bailey gave 2 caught and bowled chances to Malo in his last 2 overs but unfortunately both were put down.

David West ended with 4 – 49 off his 10 overs and Malo Holden 2 -25 off 7 overs an excellent spell by both.

In reply Sway opened with Colin Crosthwaite and Christine Dawson as she needed to get away early. The pair took the score to 13 before Christine was caught.  James Howard came in and quickly got off the mark. Colin had a discussion with James about looking for a quick single despite his suffering from a slight hamstring twinge. Unfortunately when he did call for a quick single James had not backed up and failed to make his ground and was run out for 1. Duncan Savage was then bowled without scoring and then with the score on 51 Colin was caught at deep mid-wicket off Ben Rogers first ball for a well made 25. Malo was then out for 0 and Jake Olney who played some good shots went for 1. Captain Derek Seward who had to juggle umpiring and scoring with the batting order joined Fiona who was stumped for 0. This brought David West to the crease and the score ended up at 90 with Seward being 12 not out at the end – all boundaries.

Although Sway lost there were many positives to be taken from the game – the bowling of David West and Malo Holden in particular. Duncan Savage and the 2 ladies fielded well. The potential for Jake Olney to be a  good future batsman. Colin Crosthwaite bowled and batted well.
