Steadman brilliance as Sway survive scare
Hambledon 159; Sway 175-7
Hants County Div 3 (South)
Sway survived a huge scare to see off a spirited Hambledon side, with a great piece of fielding from David Steadman ensuring a win to keep their promotion bid on track.
Lowly Hambledon were needing 21 off three overs when P. Rennie, who made 62 and was seemingly going to prove to be the home match winner, struck a ball towards the boundary and called for two. However, he had not banked on Steadman producing a good stop and a full-on 70-yard bullet throw running him out by a few inches, an act which provoked a huge celebration from his fellow fielders.
The terrific piece of fielding, which put paid to Hambledon’s hopes, was followed by Jon Grasham (2-33) bowling the last two batsman to ensure the visitors the win.
During the Hambledon innings Grasham also took two fantastic catches, while Ben Powis (3-30), Jon Waller (2-36), Steadman (1-23) and Nilantha Atapattu (1-25) all bowled well to ensure the home side came up short.
Sway batted first having won the toss and scored a below par 175-8, with many batsman getting in but none going on to net a big score. Tim Noble (47), Atapattu (29), Oscar Marshall (23) and skipper Alex Hall (19) all made promising starts.
There was a welcome flourish at the end of the innings from Will Millard – who hit a six in his unbeaten 27 – which proved crucial in the grand scheme of the game in helping Sway edge home.
