Sway have a field day in Netley win

Old Netley & Highfields 92; Sway 93-3

Hans County Div 3 (South)

Report by Jon Waller

Sway made it two wins from two league games for the season with a commanding performance at Netley. Indeed so dominant were the visitors they were home by half past six.

The home side won the toss and chose to bat on what looked to be a lovely wicket. Having hit a couple of crisp boundaries the openers were then both snaffled in quick succession by John Grasham (3-8 off seven overs, including five maidens), with Alex Hall and Will Millard taking the catches.

Then Jon Waller (2-35) got in on the act, bowling two batsman, before Ben Powis (3-18) and Nilantha Attapatu (2-28) turned the screw even further, as all four bowled tremendous spells.

But what really caught the eye was Sway’s fielding performance – one of their best yet. Waller took a terrific diving catch, FJ Charton clutched a hard chance at slip, and Attapatu held on to a steepler. Meanwhile Hall made a stumping standing up to the Sri Lankan that was hugely impressive.

Topping off the fielding performance was Nathan David, who was excellent at square leg, while Jack Baughan was worth his weight in gold, saving numerous runs at point with diving stops.

In reply Sway lost Charton early but Tim Noble and Oscar Marshall both batted with compsure, hitting some lovely straight shots. Noble hit the shot of the day with a terrific backfoot punch.

However, Noble was out at 23, adjudged LBW by the home umpire, and Marshall fell after that for 28, holing out. It was left to Atapattu (30) and Millard (12) to guide the visitor’s home.
