Indoor campaign ends in defeat (and relegation!)

Sway A vs Christchurch B

Sway skipper Steve Hannibal won the toss and elected to bat first with Skipper Dan Stevenson and Nick Brien at the top of the order. Although bogged down at times by a fine all round bowling display from Christchurch, the pair managed to work the spaces nicely and run hard between the wickets seeing them both safely back in retired. Sway, however, were not able to carry on any sort of momentum with senior all rounder Dave Marshall being the first to go trying to cut to the vacant backward point area. Chris Straw was the victim of a misunderstanding at the crease being run out cheaply after looking good early on in his brief stay (1 ball). James Howard was gone after receiving a good ball that dislodged the top of his off stump. There was however some resistance along the way from the self proclaimed ‘Big Show’ Vito Falso who played nicely but by the time he was rejoined by Dan Stevenson the overs were pretty much up leaving Sway on a disappointing 128.

So when Sway took to the field, they never really looked like defending their total. Whilst hopes were momentarily raised when the first over went for just one run, Christchurch were soon comfortably on course.  Although Dave Marshall managed to string a couple of tight overs together and Chris Straw put on a heroic fielding display it was never going to be enough. Sway went through all five bowlers but no answers could be found with Christchurch chasing down the total well within the 12 overs.

So a disappointing finish to what was at the start a very promising looking season for Hanster’s merry men - the disappointment exacerbated by a result later in the evening that looks like it has condemned Sway to relegation but with indoor training underway and the season fast approaching the players must take any existing form and transfer to the upcoming games. Big thanks to Steve Hannibal for laying on such an enjoyable show this season - getting the sides out, making it a laugh and not even playing in most of the games!
