Message from our Chairman!

Dear all,

I apologise that I am not able to be at the presentation evening on Friday 18th. Pete Bennett has kindly agreed to be master of ceremonies so I'm sure a great evening will be had by all.

As always there will be lots of awards to be presented and many people to thank so please expect a prompt start at 7:30.

It's been a good season for Sway - perhaps not as outstanding as last year but some fantastic cricket has been played and things look exciting for next year.

It's disappointing to have to report a real lack of progress with the pavilion - we can't move forward until Hampshire Cricket League give us a clear and definite statement of what we need. We are however accumulating funds in our Pavilion account and will continue to actively fund raise.

On the pitch the junior section continues to go from strength to strength -in a large part thanks to those who give their time to coach and manage. We had a wet but fun presentation evening at the end of their season in July - highlights included a presentation to Steve Drayton to mark his retirement after 9 years of coaching and the quality, and wide distribution of the chocolate cake!

The triumphs, tribulations and outstanding performances of the girls, woman's, indoor, Saturday league and Sunday Friendly sides will all presented on the 18th. One particular achievement I'd like to highlight is that, apart from one particularly difficult week, we managed to field 4 competitive teams every Saturday. For this great thanks goes to the captains who worked extremely well together and to the players who were willing to move from team to team. Particular thanks to Pete Bennett and Derek Seward who invariably had good teams at the beginning of the week only to see their players promoted to fill gaps above. Derek did a fantastic job to ensure that playing for the 4ths remained rewarding and fun throughout the season despite a high proportion of defeats - some fairly comprehensive.

After canvassing opinion the committee has concluded that we should continue to field a 4th team next year. For this to succeed we must recruit more players, ideally able to play in the higher teams, to try to prevent the last minute panic to fill up the 3rd and 4th teams that has been a recurrent feature this year. So, if you know any unattached cricketers please invite them to Sway!

Another concern this year has been the difficulty in getting the whole club together. In previous years outdoor nets, friendly matches and Saturday evenings at the Hare have all served as opportunities to meet but all have been rather thinly attended this year. A bright point was this years sponsors match featuring 20 club players. This proved a great social occasion which we will repeat next year together with some additional internal club fixtures - perhaps an evening T20, a Sunday afternoon 30 over per side game and maybe an 8 a side tournament. Ideas and offers to organise will be gratefully received.

We will also be strongly encouraging attendance at nets and the Hare!

I hope that many of you are able to attend the award ceremony on Friday 18th. I'm sure you'll have a great evening
