4th XI end season on a high

With rain forecast, both sides wanted to bat first and it was Bournemouth who got their wish on winning the toss. Sway got off to a great start when with just the second ball, James Howard had the Bournemouth captain Mike Bruty lbw for a duck. His opening partner, however,  James Marshall [no relation!] scored freely hitting any overpitched or short bowling to the boundary so it was a major breakthrough when he was bowled by Howard for 32. In the very next over Bradley Balcombe struck, clean bowling O Jones for 8 to leave Bournemouth at 41-3 after 8 overs.

Sway now turned the screw with some miserly bowling with only 5 runs scored off the next 7 overs which also included 2 further wickets. Sarge Willson who had replaced Balcombe after his 5 overs bowled Bournemouth legend and colts coach Neil Pack for just 1 and James Howard bowled C Browne for a duck. Rain then started to fall and after 18 overs there was a 25minute break in play. On the resumption, Howard (7-3-29-4) took his 4th wicket first ball with a slippery full toss brilliantly caught at short mid wicket one handed by Paul Campbell for 3. Skipper Derek Seward brought back Bradley Balcombe (7-1-34-3) into the attack and the decision reaped dividends when he had P Smith caught by his dad Andy then bowled A Fowl for 2. Wilson (7-3-6-2) then wrapped up a superb Sway bowling & fielding performance when in the next over, Sarge took the final wicket  bowling Sammanu for 6 to leave Bournemouth all out for 70.

With thick dark cloud looming it was going to be a race against time for the Sway batsmen, so needing to score quickly Sway opened their innings born-again-batsman Chris Straw and perennial slogger, club chairman Chris Baughan. Chris Straw got off the mark quickly but only lasted an over - having been reprieved off the first ball of the other opening bowler Sammanuís no-ball, he was out the very next ball - for the 3rd time in 4 games he deflected a ball outside leg onto his stumps by stepping the wrong way!

Sarge Willson came to the crease and got off the mark with a couple of late cuts each for 2. Chris Baughan then hit a massive 6 just behind square off the bowling of Bruty and next ball was dropped at mid off - an important reprieve. Shortly after tea was taken and the thick clouds dispersed during the interval. After tea both Chris Baughan and Sarge batted sensibly and took the score to 61 before Chris was bowled by Broadbent for a well made 29. Paul Campbell came to the crease and got off the mark first ball with a boundary but was also bowled in the same over by Broadbent. Albie Waterton came to the crease but was bowled for 0 with the score 67 - 4. It was then left to Sarge 13 not out  and Barney West 1not out with the help of extras to see Sway home and to earn a well-deserved win just before the heavens opened.

A great finish to the season for the 4th XI who have had some tough challenges this season, not least the presence in RD4 of some new teams to the Hampshire league that are frankly too good for that level.
