Sway just short in spite of excellent bowling display

PAULTONS II 119-7   SWAY I 118

Hants County Div 3 (South)

A depleted Sway side almost snatched an unlikely victory with a superb bowling and fielding display in a close and exciting finish against a good Paultons side.

Having lost the toss and been put into bat on a green wicket openers FJ Charton and Jon Waller started off at a brisk pace, putting on 38 in the first seven overs before the latter was out chasing a wide one.  However, the good start belied what was to come as Nilantha Atapattu and David Steadman departed early and when Charton, who had hit several lovely boundaries, was out for 26 Sway were in a spot of bother at 45-4.

After that Sway’s Will Baughan notched an excellent 29 with shots all around the wicket but partners fell at regular intervals. Jack Ford and Nanaleen (who both hit 13) looked good before getting out and none of the other batsmen troubled the scorers for long and Sway were all out in the 30th over.

With the umpires opting to have 15 overs before tea Sway knew they needed a quick start and they got exactly that with Steadman getting a wicket second ball and Waller dismissing the other opener to leave Paultons struggling at 8-2. That became 8-3 soon after a jaffa from Waller (2-20), who bowled straight through in what was easily his best spell of the season by far.

Soon after there was a great tumbling catch from Charton to dismiss regular Paultons first teamer Jon Robinson for 12 off Steadman and Nanaleen took a tremendous slip catch off the same bowler to dismiss the number five second ball and Paultons were 23-5, before two batsmen dug in, despite two drops in the field, as the home side limped to 42-5 at tea.

Afterwards Sway bowled well but had no luck – with there being a crucial drop off the final ball of Waller’s spell – the batsman dropped going on to be not out at the end.

However, it was close all the way as Atapattu (1-36) and Steadman (4-31) fought to the end but Paultons just had enough to get over the line in the 38th over against a Sway side who should be very proud of their efforts
