Two stand-out turns as Sway defeat Calmore

SWAY  196-9;  CALMORE II  146

Hants County Div 3 (South)

Sway maintained their excellent form with stand-out performances with bat and ball from Nilantha Atapattu and Jon Grasham leading them home against Calmore.

Having won the toss on a baking hot day Sway opted to bat and FJ Charton (23) and skipper Alex Hall (31) got the hosts off to a good start with both hitting some nice boundaries.  After both were out Sway had a mini wobble with Dave Steadman and Ryan Drayton going cheaply before Adam Clark (10) struck a couple of nice shots before being out. However, it was Atapattu, batting at three, who was the mainstay of the innings as he continued his recent excellent form with a priceless 58, which included four fours and a six. He was joined for a while by Vito Falso (19) who helped ensure Sway ticked things along nicely.

As the innings got to its latter stages Grasham, batting at nine, got into his stride and shepherded the tail to the final over, which he started by launching the ball over the ropes before hitting a further two boundaries in an unbeaten 38 as Sway posted  a competitive total of 195.

John Grasham - fired up with both bat & ball

In reply Calmore struggled against the pacey Steadman (0-14 off seven overs) and the accurate Jon Waller (1-29 off nine), the latter getting Taylor thanks to a good catch by Nathan David. It was David who got the next scalp, bowling Hardy for 36, and when Hall took a fantastic catch standing up off Grasham to get Henry out Calmore were struggling at 76-3 off 27 overs. However, Calmore wicketkeeper Blake then strode to the crease and caused the home side a few jitters, blasting the ball around in an entertaining 18-ball 36 until he tried one big hit too many and was bowled by the fired up Grasham, who went onto claim two more scalps and end with 4-36.  When Atapattu entered the fray at Calmore’s lower order he proved far too much to handle, quickly wrapping things up with a terrific 4-10, aided by two great catches from Jack Baughan.

Best off the bat – N. Atapattu (Sway) 58
