League Averages Published

There was plenty of Sway interest in the publication of the 2014 Hampshire Cricket League Averages.

In CD3 South it was very much the Walt and Atty show as the pair finished well placed in both the batting and the bowling averages - scoring 806 runs and taking 47 wickets between them. Neil Prince was the only other 1st team player to register, sneaking in in 20th position with 323 runs.

If looking at batting and bowling averages rather than total runs & wickets and requiring a minimum of 8 innings then Jacko actually finished 4th in CD3S with a most impressive average of 50.5. But it gets better for the curly haired maestro - Walton actually finished top in the bowling averages, with his wickets coming at 8.21 runs each - all this despite his despite his best figures being just 3-11. A few other players of note in the stats - the ever reliable John Nash of Woodgreen and sometime Sway player Kevin Cresswell of Langley Manor in the batting. Also a heads up to Sway's Cricket Development Officer at the HCB, Simon Jones who managed to make both the bowling and batting tables with Portsmouth II [is it the same Mr Jones?!]

Down in RD1 West, three Sway players were represented. Dave Marshall and Chris Hammond made the batting averages. Topping the table with an impressive 518 runs at 64.75 is Winton's Charlie May, whose average would have been even better if not bowled for a duck by Marshall in the last game of the season. In the bowling table Marshall leads the way with 40 and was the leading wicket taker in the HCL albeit he was run pretty close by Ringwood's dependable Keller Holland. Sam Nailor also made the table with a most respectable 22 wickets at 12.73. If sorted by bowling average, Marshall would have finished second behind Winton's skipper Ally Williams who took 28 wickets at just 5.30 each. Again ironically Williams' figures would have been much bette rif not for his relatively poor figures of 1-24 against Sway with his only victim being number 11Mr David! The bowling table for this division is packed full of wily not-so-young campaigners such Derek Hopkins, Tony Melbourne, Stuart Owen etc etc proving age is no barrier to wicket taking!

RD4SW saw Charlie Smith do an impressive double finishing high up in both tables. Scoring 305 runs and taking 22 wickets is impressive enough but if you exclude the the two games played by Winton's star Jan Van Wyck, Charlie tops the batting average with 76.25, over 20 runs ahead of his nearest rival, veteran runmeister, Alan Varley of Beaulieu. Pete Bennet finished in a most creditable 11th place ahead of Steve Thistleton and Denis Batchelor. In terms of averages, would have finished 4th with an impressive average of 53.50.

With the ball, Smith was joined in the averages by young Chris Straw - a fine achievement for a young spinner finishing with 12 wickets at 22.

Averages not received from Bransgore,Fawley,Ellingham & Christchurch - poor show!

Elsewhere around the divisions there were some real achievements of note. With the bat the highest run scorer in the HCL was big hitting Kiwi run-merchant Hamish McCarthy who smashed as incredible 990 runs at an average of 99 for RD1N outfit Bentworth. A creditable mention must go to another antipodean based locally, Kieran Hudson of Burley who racked up 806 runs at an incredible average of 134 - just about the highest in the HCL for any player playing a reasonable number of games.

With the ball Sway's own Mr Marshall was the leading wicket taker, but the lowest average goes to Sharma of Old Basing at 5.2 closely followed by Ally Williams of Winton with 5.3.

The highest score in the HCL this season was 222 by Jan van Wyck.....batting at number 5 against Sway 4th XI at Boltons Bench. Perhaps fair to say that Winton's 1st team star was facing somewhat easier bowling than he was used to! But well done to Dapper for getting him out!
