Sway
106-3, Fawley II 105-10
Sway went into this fixture expecting a tough game from
a good Fawley side who woulld be no doubt eager to put
one over on their ex-skipper Kev Glass in his first game
against his old club. Sway skipper Adam Clark won the
toss and elected to bowl
expecting Sway's pace attack to make best use of the new
ball. Sway opened with David Steadman who from the first
ball was both nippy and
ruthlessly accurate; and with the final ball of
the first over bowled opener Steve
Rice for a duck. With Jon Grasham at the other end,
there was little pressure release
for Fawley and with the score on just 16 Steadman struck
again trapping Rob
Leach LBW. Much now rested on the shoulders of classy
batsman Kieran Earl and so Fawley's hopes of racking up
a big score took a massive dive when Earl feathered one
through to keeper Rubycz to leave them mired
at 31-3. Fawley then suffered a mini-collapse as
first Grasham bowled Alfie
Cole for 12 then
Steadman picked up two further wickets including a
contraversial LBW that saw big hitter Jason
Ford triggered for a golden. With 6 wickets down and
only 36 on the board, John
Doe and D Phillips were left with no choice other than
trying to dig in
and attempt to
bat out as many of the remaining 27 overs as possible.
To be fair they did this very well - seeing off the
openers the progressing and a slow but steady rate
against Sway's change bowlers Robert Steadman and Steve
Thistleton. It was not until the 27th over with the
score on 85 that Sway enjoyed any further success with
Nilantha Atapattu cleaning up Doe for a resolute 17 in
his first over. Sway now had
a whiff of the Fawley tail and Steve How managed
to pick up two quick wickets. With 9 wickets down,
David Steadman returned in search of a 5-wicket haul and
it seemed the chance was gone when a dolly was put down
at 1st slip, however, not to be outdone some sharp
reactions by Rubycz standing up
to the stumps saw Phillips stumped for an
excellent 31 to leave Fawley all out for 105.
Obviously if Fawley were to have any chance of victory,
they would have to take quick wickets and with the score
on just 7 skipper Clark was caught behind for a duck.
Grasham also departed early on
- trapped LBW for 8 giving
Fawley the faintest
scent of an
improbable victory. In a key moment Atapattu rode
his luck being put down twice
early in his innings and after that never looked
back. With tectonic
plates moving faster than opener Steve How's scoring
rate, it was
left to the
classy Sri Lankan to score the runs and he was
soon on top of the Fawley bowling as
Sway cruised
towards the required target. Although How was eventually
dismissed for a
resolute 13, Sway reached the target off 28 overs
with Atapattu 63 not out.
All in
all a pretty ruthless performance by Sway setting the
lads up perfectly for the clash next Saturday at second
placed Verwood.
