Carnival Cup comes home

SWAY   232-7,  LLOYDS OF LONDON   60. Sway won by 172 runs

With the original Carnival Cup match against Sanford on the 27th June cancelled due to the World Cup, Lloyds kindly filled the gap on their visit on Sunday. Playing over 42 overs Sway batted first and were in trouble at 5-2 as L.Huitson 2-26 and J.Smalling 0-14 caused early problems resulting in Pete Bennet and David Steadman putting together a watchful then fruitful new-fore-old partnership of 119 both recording personal best scores for Sway before Steadman was well caught by Smalling off Charlie Green 2-34 for 60. Bennet fell for 69 one of C.Veck's 2 wickets for 33 and it was a belligerent knock of 42 n.o from Charlie Smith with 3 x 6 and 4 fours which pushed the final total up to 232 -7.

Due to a succession of niggling injuries sustained in their short tour Sway  skipper Steve How allowed Lloyds to field 12 players so James Howard and Alex Horton opened the bowling wanting and getting a good start and runs were very much at a premium for Lloyds. Dapper bowled M.Watts with the 2nd ball of the innings and went on to take 3-14 off 7 overs and with Horton taking 2-3 off 6 overs the visitors never recovered from this bad start. John Wills 1-2 picked up his 198 wicket for the club then watched spin wizard Dave Hurrell bowl two men with his 2nd and 3rd deliveries and nearly claimed a hat-trick with the ball sailing past him for four at a nice catchable height. Damien Locke then confirmed his liking for the number 2 as he had made that many runs then picked up a couple of wickets (2-10) this of course following on his earlier success with the twins, a late burst of runs from J.Smalling was ended as Steve Hannibal 1-6  bowled  him for 11 leaving Lloyds all out for just 60 ensuring (pu intended) that the cup returned to Sway.

An enjoyable game watched by a smattering of supporters and the Carnival Cup back in Sway's possession in Steve How's first season as Friendly Skipper.

Pete Bennet - tasty personal best of 69 (runs, not burgers!)
