20th June 2010 Poor showing by 1st XI Sway 133ao, Langley Manor II 135-4. Langley Manor II won by 6 wickets The 1st XI produced a very disappointing performance with the bat to lose lose their second game in succession at home to Langley Manor II. Sway batted first on what looked to be a decent wicket and despite relatively inoffensive bowling, were soon in all kinds of trouble. Out of the frontline batsmen only perhaps Adam Clark faced an unplayable delivery. Alex Hall went for just 6 - attempting to flick a ball to leg but getting too fine a contact and caught by the keeper. Chris Hammond was also caught behind, this time attempting a cut outside off. Dan Stevenson went for a duck - defending on the back foot with the ball deflecting off his glove back slowly back onto the stumps. Only Nilantha Atapattu (62) was putting up much in the way resistance and although Sway were 30-4, a partnership began to develop with Jon Grasham which saw Sway recover to 84. However when Grasham was bowled for 18 playing a shot he will hope the Langley Manor cameraman did not catch, Sway were right back in the mire. Jack Walton and Ross Clark were both dismissed for a run between them leaving Sway at 100-8. Whilst the tail did wag somewhat with George Thornton (15) and Dave Marshall (13) Sway were all out for 133 when the par score should have been at least 175. In reply Langley Manor knocked off the runs with relative ease - made worse for Sway by their top score Kev Cresswell 67no having turned out for Sway back in the late 90's. The innings was not without its controversy the key point being when Cresswell pulled a shot to the boundary and appeared to dislodge the bails with his back foot in the process, however, as neither umpire (or most of the players) were watching, play continued after some debate. In truth however Sway had made rocks for their own backs and did not deserve anything out of the game and although Atapattu bowled superbly 10-6-14-0 to restrict the scoring, it was too low a total to defend. Sway now face the mammoth trek to Compton - a side as good at home as their are poor away!!
