5th June 2010 U15s run New Milton A close
Sway 106ao,
New Milton A 107-5
Sway U15s produced a
gutsy performance and at times looked as if they would be able to
pull off a shock victory.
Sway batted first and the innings got off to a disastrous start when skipper David Steadman ran out partner Niall Gallagher with just 4 on the board. However, new batsman Gus Wooley immediately got stuck into some seemingly indifferent New Milton bowling; playing some fine strokes as he lashed the ball to all parts of the ground. Supported by Steadman, Sway motored on at a cracking 8 an over. However, with the score on 64 in the 8th over a further running mishap saw Wooley run out for a fine 27. New Milton slower bowlers now started to exert some pressure. Hampshire & England's Charlotte Taylor bowled Steadman (27) in recording 2-22 and most impressive was Toby Edwards with 3 for 11. Joe Fussell (13) and Andrew Straw (12) did get going but in the end the Sway innings petered out for a rather disappointing 106 all out given the good start. In reply New Milton got off to a flying start racing to 43 without loss. However in the 7th over medium pacer Darren Clark was introduced to the fray and claimed 2 wickets in his first over. Clark then proceeded to claim 2 further wickets and Joe Fussell one. Suddenly New Milton were reeling on 63-5 after 11 overs. By this point the New Milton team and supporters were very anxious and the shock result looked on. However a steady and gutsy partnership between Taylor and Hussey slowly edged New Milton back into control and they made it to the required total without too much further incident. All in all another excellent performance by the boys although they will be left ruing what might have been. Perhaps New Milton batted just a bit deeper than Sway - or at least were more protective of their wickets, but the gap between the teams was not large at all. Again excellent fielding by Sway with almost no mistakes - Fussell, Lewis Marden, and Matt Laverton were kept busy but put in faultless displays. Fielding practise on Tuesday to see if we can whip the ball into the keeper a pit harder and lower - to pressurise batsmen.
