5th June 2010 1st XI overcome Woodgreen in thriller Sway 140ao, Woodgreen 122ao. Sway won by 18 runs Sway first XI maintained their 100% record - but were made to fight every inch of the way by a determined and skilful Woodgreen side. On a very warm afternoon Sway skipper Jon Grasham won the toss and elected to bat. It was soon clear, however, that Sway were going to have a game on their hands as the Woodgreen opening pair of Tim Venn (9-4-12-2) and Jason Holderness (7-2-24-1) generated both pace and accuracy. They were supported by a fine performance in the field by Woodgreen with barely a single mis-field. Before long Sway were in trouble with both Adam Clark and Alex Hall falling cheaply. Joe Rodway and Nilantha Attapattu began to develop a partnership but when Rodway was dismissed for 17 and Steve How for a duck, Sway were really struggling. Another potentially decent partnership began to develop between Attapattu and Grasham, but in the story of the innings, just when it began to look promising, it was broken when Attapattu (53) expertly guided a ball to gully. The Sway innings began to fall apart with Jack Walton going for a golden duck and Grasham being bowled for 21; and in the event Sway were all out for 140 - a seemingly impossible score to defend. In reply Sway attempted to match, then better Woodgreen's efforts. Firstly with the pace and guile of Grasham and Walton; and secondly by a faultless fielding performance. Woodgreen got away to a very slow start and the pressure told when Jack Walton, bowling an inspired spell claimed the wicket of run-monster Jon Nash for just 4. Walton followed this with 3 further wickets in an inspired 8 over spell. However, Woodgreen rallied and with Sam Parker fighting a stubborn rear-guard action they fought their way back into the match. Whilst some superb and mean bowling from Attapattu (10-3-18-2) kept Sway in the game, a partnership developed between Parker and number 8 Henry Davies. If unbroken Woodgreen would surely win and as they edged over 100 the game began to slip away from Sway. However, despite being under the weather, Steve Thistleton stepped up to mark to claim the most important wicket in his career to date - producing a bail busting delivery to bowl Parker for a fine 67. When Davies was also dismissed, the balance of the game switched back to Sway. Jack Walton returned to the attack to take the 9th wicket to record a superb 5-wicket haul to finish with 9-2-21-5. With 3 overs to go and Woodgreen needing 7 an over, the fielders retreated to the boundary, however, in the penultimate over it was suddenly all over when Thistleton claimed his second wicket trapping the Woodgreen tail-ender LBW. A superb game of cricket played in good spirit between two very competitive sides!
