Sway go down to Sanford

Sandford 184-7, Sway "B" 113ao. Sway lost by 71 runs

The annual pilgrimage to Guildford took place on the final Sunday of April as usual and in keeping with earlier encounters Sway travelled with 10 hale souls. Arriving in good time skipper Pete Bennet had again distinguished himself with another excellently prepared lunch, although things could have turned nasty as Wills and Harvey eyed up the spare portion.

Batting first on an unpredictable strip Sam Harvey claimed two early wickets courtesy of a sharp catch behind by Bennet and a clean bowled. Opener J.Quantrell hit a quick 30 but the wily John Wills lured him into hitting one to a slightly deeper F.J.Charton at mid off. A.Sprogis and G.Povey kept things moving but it was Sanford captain A.Forbes who stayed unbeaten with 47 helped at the end by some big hits from D.Field (25). Successful Sway bowlers were Harvey 3-27, Wills 2-23, Andy Lee 1-33 and The Pieman 1-16.

Sway's reply never really got going with early wickets falling, Andy Lee hit a brisk 17 but it was Sam Harvey who started to hit out before suffering a recurrence of an earlier groin strain necessitating a runner which eventually led to Pete Bennet and James Howard contriving to run Harvey out for 38. All that was left was for Andy Hillyar to try to maintain no ducks being recorded which he did with a single past mid on, although Hillyar did later disgrace himself after over indulging on the host's egg sandwiches leading to a rather fetid atmosphere on the journey home
