Sway in Indoor Cup exit
Sway 114ao, Hythe & Dibden 115-3
|
Sway suffered a 1st round defeat at the hands of Hythe & Dibden. Sway lost the toss and were put into bat. Some tight bowling, in particular from Hythe star Ritchie Froggett saw Sway off to a slow start characterized by failed boundary attempts rather than working the walls. The pressure started to tell firstly when Alex Hall was deceived by a Froggett slower ball and chipped a catch then skipper Steve How became the first of five Sway run outs with the score at 18-2 after 3 overs. Jon Grasham and Dave Marshall (20) picked up the pace and took the score onto to 71 when Marshall was run out. Terry Patch (20) then joined Grasham and worked the ball well. As Sway tried to accelerate the scoring in the last two overs Grasham (26), Patch and Matt Brearley (6) were all run out with the final wicket falling on the penultimate ball. The total of 114 was probably 20 runs short of a par total and the Sway bowlers faced an uphill battle. Sway started with Matt Brearley and Jon Grasham and there was some tight bowling and fine fielding, however, the extras seemed to come at regular intervals to relieve the pressure on the Hythe opening partnership of Sean Tongs and Matt Howe. with the score on 20 Sway did strike a blow when Tongs was run out. When Dave Marshall caught Matt Howe (24) with a trademark left handed catch at full stretch, Sway hopes were raised and Sway were very much in the game, helped by a fine spell of bowling from Matt Brearley 3-0-22-0. However, a combinations of extras and some good batting by Tom Porter and Matt Young saw Hythe keep on top of the required rate. When Porter retired, Froggett entered the fray needing a relatively straightforward 13 off the last two overs. Sway still had a sniff of a chance when Steve How caught Froggett off the wall off the bowling of Marshall but in the final over Hythe notched up the necessary runs with 4 balls to spare.
