2nds edge out Hythe 3rds in thriller!

After their opening week embarrassment at the hands of the third team, Sway 2nds were determined to get back to winning ways but were pushed all the way in an exciting game by Hythe 3rds. Sway won the toss and elected to bat and got off to a poor start losing 2 quick wickets - firstly Steve Hannibal being run out then Rick How showing training ground finesse to guide a catch to point. However Ross Clark (36 not out) and Rob Steadman (40)  both played untroubled innings, and one retired Dave Marshall made a quick fire 25 not out, and even Matt "watership down" Bramwell got in on the act with a fine supporting 13 not out including a big six. Sway eventually posted a decent total of 146 for 4 off their 12 overs.

With the ball Sway started fairly brightly albeit without making the breakthrough. Sam Richards and Tom Meade opened the batting for Hythe and both started working the ball well before Richard was well caught off the wall by Rob Steadman with Dave Marshall's first ball. Meade and Matt Young However continued to play well and made hay during a period of weak bowling and indifferent fielding and at the half way point were very much in the game at 66-1.  Matt Bramwell and Rob Steadman slowed it down and bowled relatively tight spells in the middle of the innings and the pressure finally began to spell. Firstly Jonjo Stovell was run out off Rob Steadman with the score on 99 then K McCarthy was run out. Going into the last 2 overs Hythe needed a tough but possible 34 to win.

Ross Clark bowled the penultimate over which went for 16 runs but did claim the crucial wicket of Sam Meade who was run out by Dave Marshall for a fine 42. Hythe therefore needed 18 to win off the last over which was to be bowled by the skipper Marshall. The first ball was a rather cheeky ball well outside off which he got away with.7 runs then came off the next 3 balls meaning Hythe needed 11 off 3 balls. Crucially, the 4th ball was a run out so Sway well almost home. The fifth ball produced a diving stop with Marshall's boot and with the final ball a catch was chipped to Ross Clark. Sway had won but it was far too close for comfort and they will have to produce a far better performance against table toppers Swan Green. Not least, giving away 33 runs in wides!
