RD2SW Sway I 134-7, Milford on Sea 133ao. Sway won by 3 wickets
|
With 5 regular players away at the Isle of Wight Festival, Sway had to dig deep into their reserves to beat a decent Milford side that were sitting just above them in mid-table. Skipper Jon Grasham again lost the toss and Milford elected to bat. Sway's bowling started weakly due to a combination of loose bowling and unfortunate byes and Milford had clocked up 30 in no time before Jon Grasham struck with Pete Hammett taking the catch behind the stumps. Grasham was now really fired up and was extracting both pace and bounce out of the pitch. Supported by some fine bowling at the other end by the much improved Steve Thistleton Sway soon had Milford in deep trouble at 35 for 5 with Grasham bagging 3 wickets to Thistleton's two - which included the prized wicket of Milford run-merchant Jamie Boynton who was caught by Henry Thornton at mid-on. Perhaps unwisely instead of getting their heads down to post a defendable score, Milford continue to attack - and to lose wickets with only Boynton junior showing much resistance on his way to 55. A fine spell of bowling by Terry Patch with 3 wickets polished off the tail, albeit Sway will have been disappointed not to have finished them off for 20 or 30 less than the 133 they eventually posted. In reply Sway lost their first wicket at 21 when makeshift opener Joe Rodway was bowled for 4. However, fellow opener Henry Thornton showed a useful return to form alongside Nilantha Atapattu who batted with his usual aggressive intent. Atapattu made a rapid 21 but was bowled attempting to hot the ball into the sea. Thornton batted with his new partner Barry Jones who despite scratching around for a bit of form, hung in there on his way to 30. Sway did have a bit of wobble losing the wickets of Thornton (top scorer with 35), Jon Grasham (5) and Terry Patch (22) but made it home with a couple of overs to spare and 3 wickets in hand.
