At the
start of the new millennium the rebirth of another Sway Cricket Club was
launched. This time the first season was to be made up of just League
games with no friendlies or cup matches arranged. The side were placed
back in New Forest Division 4 along with 11 other clubs and due
to play 18 matches under the captaincy of Steve Keen, the opening
game on May the 6th being at Pitmore Lane against Centurions, however
heavy rain on the Saturday morning put paid to this plan although this
proved to be the only game not to be played.
10 players made the short trip to Minstead to take on Cadnam IV XI but
an abject batting display saw Sway bowled out for 54 and the hosts lose
only 1 wicket (a run out) in getting the runs for a comfortable win.
The first home game saw Ringwood 2nd's the visitors and they posted 207 -
8 against a 9 man Sway side, in reply Jim Lowe launched a savage attack on
the bowling smashing 10 sixes and 9 fours in scoring a 49 ball 104 before
leaving for work at 6 pm he and opening partner Dave Hurrell putting on
117, Hurrell made 28 and Keen was unbeaten on 25 but the side was dismissed
for 194 after 33.1 overs, May was completed with a 4 Wicket defeat against
BAT IV (Lowe 84 n.o) with Nick Wright and Alex MaGill becoming the first
Colts to play in the adult team.
June opened with 3 straight wins a 58 run defeat of Ellingham III, a
5 wicket beating of Redlynch and Hale III, Wayne Veal taking 5 -
35 and Chris Baughan hitting 51 n.o and then a 6 wicket rout of
Alderholt II, the month closed with a narrow defeat by local
rivals Hordle II Sway posting 173 - 6 Lowe making 62 and Hordle
winning with 14 balls to spare with 177 - 7 an 11 year old named
Terry Steadman making his debut taking 2 - 15 and finishing the season
with 11 Wickets at 10.09.
On the 1st of July Sway traveled to Steve Keen's favourite ground Hunts
Farm and rattled up 206 - 8 against Michelmersh and Timsbury III, Mike
Steadman and Robin Ferris putting on a League record 7th wicket
partnership of 79 Ferris hitting 10 4's in an aggressive 55, despite Keen
giving himself an over Sway triumphed by 30 Runs. A 3 wicket defeat to
Centurions was followed by a 25 revenge win over Cadnam then two reversals
against Ringwood and BAT. Pleased to move into August Ellingham were
easily defeated by 8 Wickets (Lowe 5 - 19) before Champions elect
East Tytherley II recorded a 60 run win although the defeat was
tempered by playing at their ground with the pub right on the boundary the
only problem being when Lowe and Hurrell went out to start the 2nd
innings the designated umpires were still at the bar. Two of the
last three games were losses sandwiched between them was a good win over
Hordle who were restricted to just 85 - 3 off their 40 overs and present
chairman David Thistleton 30 n.o guided Sway home in the 26th over. So the
season finished with 7 wins and 10 defeats with the club in 9th place in
the table.
