Season Review - 1998

Sway took to life in New Forest Division One quite well with some close games won and lost and taking part in some easy wins and heavy defeats finishing up winning 7 and losing 6. That evergreen veteran Norman Wilkie was again in command with a similar squad to last years' promoted side apart from the retired Dick Page.

May was a good month with all 5 Saturdays seeing completed games, the opening match at Calmore resulted in a tense 3 run win, Sway posting 118 - 6 off 40 overs and with Calmore at 84 - 9 the game looked safe but when Mike White started the 39th over the score was 114. Fortunately 4 balls and 1 run later Sway had won. They followed this up by beating Esso easily after making 180 - 4  Simon Baker (70) and Mark Randell-Turner (45) putting on 126 for the 3rd wicket. Esso were bowled out for 68. An 83 run win over Paultons, (Baker 59 Randell-Turner 78 3rd wicket partnership of 107) was sandwiched between a couple of heavy defeats by Bramshaw and Cranborne

.
The only games in June were home and away against Exbury with Carl Osborne 5-19 and Mike White  4-18 skittling out the visitors for 40, Sway losing 5 wickets in winning, in the return Exbury fared better making 122 (Randell-Turner 5-24) then reduced Sway to 83-9 and despite an unbroken 10th wicket partnership of 33 between Ray Gunn and Dave Hurrell Sway finished 6 runs short. There were only 2 games in July as well, a 4 wicket win over Paultons and despite being bowled out for 108 by O T and Romsey, White 5-34 and Osborne 4-30 dismissed them for 89. Of the 4 matches in August there were again heavy defeats too Cranbourne and Bramshaw plus a last day loss at Camelot, with a comfortable victory once more over Esso in between.

The usual mixture of Friendlies, Cup and Midweek games were also played with cup wins over Swan Green (Paul Yates 70), Milford and Esso. Things were getting exciting before Exbury won a close match with just 2 balls remaining. The President of the club Paul Miller put up a trophy the aptly named President's Cup which Sway won by beating Burley at Pitmore Lane in July and with the newly formed Colts section having just finished their first season everything was looking rosy, however it was not to last.
