Above left is last remaining piece of runway from Beaulieu WW2 airfield which is now used for model aircraft flying (see Spitfire above). The remainder of the airfield has almost completely been reclaimed by the forest although the lines of the runways are still clearly visible. Beaulieu Airfield was built in 1942,and was used mainly as a base for anti-submarine patrol work. In 1944 the airfield transferred to 2 TAF(2nd Tactical Air Force) for preparation for D-Day. In March 1944 the 9th Air Force/USAAF arrived who stayed until the end of August. Following the departure of the USAAF, in December 1944 the Airborne Forces Experimental Establishment (AFEE) arrived . Involved in experimental work with glider towing, parachute drops etc. Beaulieu was home not only to RAF and USAF pilots, but also to Czech, New Zealand and Canadian crews. Planes operating from the base included Halifax and Wellington bombers.

Bucklers Hard, Beaulieu Buckler's Hard is a picturesque 18th century village on the banks of the Beaulieu River. Historically, it is famed as the place where some of the ships of Nelson's fleet were built including the Agamemnon, the Euryalus and the Swiftsure, all of which fought at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. |

Traditional New Forest ponies. Pure bred New Forest ponies are extremely hardy. Although free to roam the forest, all ponies belong so somebody and they are all marked. |

Spot the deer. Deer are not that difficult to find in the forest, but they are very difficult to get close to! In the pic on the left some Fallow deer are hiding. A close up is on the right! | |
Red Deer - 13th November 2005
|
In October I was lucky enough to stumble upon the Red Deer herd during the rut. This was spectacular will the bellow of the dominant stag echoing around the forest like something out of Jurassic Park! Of course sods law meant that I did not have my camera on me at the time. However, armed with my camera on the 13th Nov, I found the herd again. I managed to get within 100 yards downwind of them (across a bog!) before they started getting jittery. In the fourth picture, you can see a white deer (its not an albino) which stands out a mile unlike the 4 deer to the right that you can hardly see. In times gone by, being white would have been very risky with wolves and hunters around, however, given that the main threat is now cars, being bright white may actually be an advantage! In fact, I think I have actually photographed 2 white ones later, but the photo is too blurred to be 100% sure. |
